On Redistricting…
So this has been rattling around in my brain since last night. Our county is one of the fasting growing in Georgia and is constantly building schools and redistricting. Next school year the zones will be radically altered as they have remodeled several older schools, built several new schools, and have at least one more school with remodeling to be completed during the next school year.
In our house we are pretty much just going with the flow. My daughter has taken the approach that sooner or later all of them will change schools so it isn’t much to get worked up about. For this coming year we are so far staying where she has been and that’s okay. If they decide to zone us to the new school that is slightly closer to home, that will be okay too. I almost prefer the old school because it will be a smaller population; but I am open to just about anything as long as the bus doesn’t arrive before 7am and my daughter continues to receive a decent education.
I was amazed to hear parents saying that they were disappointed with their districting because their child’s friends were being rezoned, or because they didn’t want their children to have to change schools. Honestly, friends move, life changes, this is reality, and as far as changing schools goes unless you are homeschooled or your town only has one school, it’s going to happen, get used to it.
Even more amazing to me was the mother who voiced concern because our current school, which is going to lose 1/3 of it’s students, will also lose teachers, and so the classes will still be the same size. Yes, this is true, but the difference will be that the school will only be about 2/3 the size it is this year and students will no longer be having classes in rooms that were never intended to be class rooms and lunch will no longer take up more than half the school day. Besides, all our classes are well within the guidelines for class size, we just have way too many classes to fit in our building, heck a couple more classrooms this year and they’d have been bringing out the trailers.
So now that I’ve gotten that off my chest I guess I’ll go prep some supper and wait for my munchkin to come home.
