American Idol – Top 11

So tonight it’s the top 11 singing Billboard’s Hot 100 #1s. I’m always amazed by the repeat picks we get off this category, so many songs, so few sung on Idol. I could do without all the rambling that happens at the beginning of the show, it’s all so pointless.
- Lee DeWyze – The Letter ~ The Boxtops – He had a lot more going on with his performance this week and he is starting to own the stage. I hope he keeps moving in this direction confidence wise, although I’m with Simon thinking he needs to keep his material current or at least current sounding.
- Paige Miles – Against All Odds ~ Phil Collins – Ouch, that was a really rough start and it didn’t really get any better. She was better last week when she was sick. She’s a definite bottom 3 contender.
- Tim Urban – Crazy Little Thing Called Love ~ Queen – I must admit that I shuddered when I first heard what he was singing, and while it wasn’t my favorite performance of all time it was better than I thought it would be. He looks like he’s shaking some of the nerves he had in the beginning of this competition, but he’s boring when he doesn’t suck.
- Aaron Kelly – I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing ~ Aerosmith – I actually thought he might do well with this until I heard about the laryngitis. He did a fair job and there weren’t too many bum notes, he just needs to show a touch
- Crystal Bowersox – Me and Bobby McGee ~ Janis Joplin – I so love her, she really knows who she is and what she wants. She just delivers such solid performances and I love her quirkiness, I mean who else would put a carpet on stage.
- Michael Lynche – When a Man Loves a Woman ~ Percy Sledge – He’s so smooth, and he always give a total performance. I am waiting for him to do something really different and out of his box.
- Andrew Garcia – I Heard it Through the Grapevine ~ Marvin Gaye – Well, it’ s better than when he’s stuck behind the guitar, but he just has no range. He just sort of plods along on a single note going nowhere and doing nothing. He’s a real bottom 3 contender.
- Katie Stevens – Big Girls Don’t Cry ~ Fergie – Well, at least she looked alive up there. It still had some really rough, pitchy spots and I can’t imagine listening to it ever again.
- Casey James – Power of Love ~ Huey Lewis and the News – Except for a couple of gratuitous wanderings across the stage he is really stiff. He sings all right but it was truly a copy cat version, I’ll have to side with Simon for the second time in one night.
- Didi Benami – You’re No Good ~ Linda Ronstadt – There go the dark looks t’s, and there were some real pitch issues as well; but she did manage to work the stage.
- Siobhan Magnus – Superstition ~ Stevie Wonder – She always seems to be having so much fun on the stage. I do think it’s time for the screech at the end of the song to go, she needs to let go of the gimmicks. I won’t even take on her look for the night.
bottom 3: Katie/Tim, Andrew, Paige
So there it is another round of Idol’s favorite cover songs, I know that they don’t want to be compared to current artists; but I can’t quite wrap my head around a bunch of kids still in the market for acne scar removal cream singing songs from my childhood. Looking forward to seeing someone really sucky go home tomorrow.
