A Different Kind of Sky

We went to a member’s night event at the Pink Palace last night. It was the premiere of the IMAX film about the Hubble telescope. Member’s nights are always an adventure but this film was just amazing. From the science required to build the telescope, to the astronauts who launched it and fixed it, to the astounding images and film footage. If you’ve never felt tiny before, this film is your chance. I’m betting we’ll see it at least once more before it’s gone.

I’ve been looking for an activity for Miss Muffin that will allow her to spend time with, take direction from, and in general interact with another adult. I figure she needs at least some exposure outside the family, I just want to ensure it’s positive in nature. Some of the ideas we’ve come up with so far are dance lessons, karate lessons, or riding lessons at the nearby equestrian center. I’m sure before we finally settle on one we’ll come up with a few more ideas. Any thoughts?

To see more great sky photos visit…

I think my parents saw that IMAX when it was here — I know they went to something at our Science Center about the Hubble. Very well could have been this. If it was, I’m sorry I missed it. Space fascinates me.
As for your daughter, is there anything she’d like to be tutored in? Knitting? A foreign language? My daughter dances, and is a Girl Scout, which has some advantages. If she’s 14, you can get her into Venture Scouting, which is a mixed-gender event combined with Boy Scouts. I know some Venture Scouts; they get to go on VERY cool adventures.
Oh, I also meant to say… dance classes for little ones are great as is karate or tae kwon do. Even for girls.
Those are awesome pics! Looks very cool.
Thanks Alice, she really did enjoy dance classes when they weren’t so late in the day she was falling asleep in them. That totally won’t be a problem now, our night owl could stay up forever. Good idea about the Adult Ed classes, who knows I might even enjoy a few of them.
I’d see the sky a whole lot differently if I didn’t need a telescope to see that.
Ideas for Miss Muffin?
I recommend the idea of dance classes. If one teacher doesn’t work out, find another. They can be radically different from one another.
A drama club would not only get her interacting with an adult, but with other kids and can help a lot in future public speaking, cultural references, and vocabulary. If you’re looking specifically for adult interactions, Toast Masters will allow kids in, but is geared for adults. My mother dragged my sister off to a knitting class as a family while I was still fairly young (9? 10?) That’s been a good thing to know. You can check the school system web sites to see what adult education classes might be offered than can be done this way.
