American Idol – Top 9 Perform

Tonight the top 9 sing songs from the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame. We get to see a cute little package of Steven touring the Hall of Fame. It’s a 90 minute show for 9 contestants, no time to spare Ryan instructs us to watch Jacob’s package.
Jacob Lusk – Man In The Mirror – Michael Jackson – He was going to sing Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On but he felt it wasn’t him so he’s doing this instead. I could have done without the arrogant little lecture at the end of his piece where he claims if he’s in the bottom 3 it’s because America isn’t ready to look at themselves in the mirror. Vocally this was his calmest, least overdone performance this season. 1-866-idols-01
Haley Reinhart – Piece of My Heart – Janis Joplin – This has to be my favorite Haley performance to date. No super revealing outfit, no fake vocal tricks, just a solid vocal performance with great stage presence. If she can keep this up she can go a lot further than I ever thought.

Casey Abrams – Have You Ever Seen The Rain – Creedence Clearwater Revival – At one point something sounded off but I’m not sure it was Casey, more likely the famous Idol sound system. It took a second to let go of CCR as I listened but once I did I really liked this and I can hardly wait to hear the studio version. 1-866-idols-03
Lauren Alaina – Natural Woman – Aretha Franklin – This song has been done almost every season on Idol making it a poor choice for Lauren. She does it well enough, it’s just that she didn’t add anything to it or bring anything new to the performance. 1-866-idols-04
James Durbin – While My Guitar Gently Weeps – George Harrison – I love, love, love this! James delivers a vocally solid, emotionally charged performance that left Grandma and I cheering. No way he’s going home any time soon. 1-866-idols-05
Scotty McCreery – That’s Alright Mama – Elvis Presley -Scotty is just so cute and he obviously had a ton of fun with this tonight. Elvis was a great way for Scotty to tackle rock – familiar, a little country, and in the right vocal range. Go Scotty! 1-866-idols-06
Pia Toscano – River Deep, Mountain High – Tina Turner – The music is up tempo and the words are faster I’ll give her that. The girl has got the pipes, there is no denying that but she seriously lacks stage presence. I don’t care how pretty her voice is I wouldn’t pay to go see a Pia show unless I was suffering from insomnia. 1-866-idols-07
Stefano Langone – When A Man Loves A Woman – Percy Sledge – There is something lacking in Stefano’s voice, it has no depth or warmth. The notes are right and the phrasing is better, not great, he just doesn’t move me. Guess it’s a good thing for him that 2 out of 3 judges loved it. 1-866-idols-08
Paul McDonald – Folsom Prison Blues – Johnny Cash – I just don’t get it, he’s happy he killed a man, he’s happy he is stuck in prison, he wants to stay there? It was too f***ing happy. I love Paul but that was just too weird for words.

My Top 3: James, Scotty, Haley
My Bottom 3: Lauren, Paul, Stefano
The show ends with everyone dancing and having a grand time while the credits roll. Can I just say that I hated Lauren and Pia’s outfits and hair tonight – Gwen doesn’t need to interfere anymore. Overall I think they all did a better job of picking the right songs, it will be interesting to see who actually winds up in the bottom 3 tomorrow night and who goes home.
