American Idol – Top 8 Perform

It’s Movie Night on Idol, wonder what we’ll hear. We open with a reminder of Pia’s surprise exit last week. Jennifer Lopez has been named the “World’s Most Beautiful Women” by People magazine and Ryan tries to embarrass her a little and then it’s time to start the performances.
Paul McDonald – Old Time Rock & Roll – Bob Seger (Risky Business) – This was not at all what I was expecting from this performance. Paul’s appeal is beginning to wear thin. Of course, the judges love it, they love everything this season. I’m actually missing Simon now. 1-866-idols-01
Lauren Alaina – The Climb – Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana: The Movie) – Okay, she sings better than Miley but she falls back on most of Miley’s tricks to get through this song, and there is just need for it. She lacks confidence which makes a case for making these kids wait until they are just a little bit older. The judges love it, they love everything. 1-866-idols-02
Stefano Langone – End Of The Road – Boyz II Men (Boomerang) – I truly wish I could hear what the producers hear, to me he is too nasally. He’s still squinting and he has a wicked case of pageant arms but his phrasing is better. The judges love it, they love everything. 1-866-idols-03
Scotty McCreery – I Cross My Heart – George Strait (Pure Country) – Scotty changed his song and I sure wish he hadn’t, so does Jimmy Iovine. I really think that Everybody’s Talkin’ At Me – Harry Nilsson (Midnight Cowboy) would have been a better choice for him. The long, high (well high for Scotty) note at the end was rough, but he did a typical solid Scotty job, I’m just holding out for Scotty having a moment. The judges love it, they love everything. 1-866-idols-04
Casey Abrams – Nature Boy – Nat King Cole (The Boy With Green Hair) – Once again Jimmy was right he should have done the Phil Collins song. This wasn’t a horrible performance, it just gets lost in translation on the mammoth stage. Oh well, the judges love it, they love everything.

Haley Reinhart – Call Me – Blondie (American Gigolo) – This was definitely a step back for Haley. The song is way bigger than her voice and it swallows her whole. And lets not even get into the posturing, short dress, and crazy lighting. And surprise surprise, the judges only liked it, I thought they loved everything. 1-866-idols-06
Jacob Lusk – Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon & Garfunkel (The Pursuit of Happiness) – Jimmy gives him heck for lecturing America last week and thumbs down Jacob’s song choices as being too corny. This was one of Jacob’s more sedate performances and relatively enjoyable but there were few funky notes there. Oh well, the judges love it, they love almost everything. 1-866-idols-07
James Durbin – Heavy Metal – Sammy Hagar (Heavy Metal) – I just love James and this is one time when Jimmy had it wrong. James just lights up on stage and delivers the biggest, most confident performance of the night. James is obviously in awe of Zakk Wylde (thanks for the cool accompaniment) and Zakk thinks James can sing his a** off. The judges love it, and for once they are right. 1-866-idols-08
Top to Bottom:
James
Scotty
Lauren
Jacob
Haley
Casey
Stefano
Paul
It will be interesting to see who goes tomorrow. I’m guessing a guy based on the night’s performances and the fact that there are only two girls left. Odds just aren’t in the guys favor right now.
