Thoughts On SEO
I admit that when I started blogging I had absolutely no concerns over how my blog ranked, how much traffic I had, or whether or not I could be found by the major search engines. If you’d asked me I’d have said, “Search Engine Optimization, what’s that?” Seriously I just wanted to share a few random thoughts on my life and American Idol, the rest never occurred to me.
When I came back to blogging after a self-imposed ban I realized it would be fun to meet and share with other bloggers. I joined some weekly memes, chain searched blogs and finally tried googling some topics in hopes of finding related blogs. I can just hear everyone who ever tried that laughing; but back then I was amazed at how few blogs that came up in the search had anything to do with what I searched. By then I’d heard about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and realized that many of these blogs were taking advantage of it (even abusing it) but didn’t really see how it applied to me.
Fast forward to today and I have a collected and lost followers more times than I can count, and done my best to consistently update and upgrade my blog. I at one point managed a page rank of 3 but for the most part I sit a PR2 and I’m usually comfortable with that. Occasionally a spammer gets to me though and I go check out their latest, greatest SEO tool in hopes of improving my rankings and search-ability. I find many of these plugins and tools quite interesting but I’m not prepared to spend a $100 or more for any of them yet. In fact if I were going to invest in Search Engine Optimization I’d be more likely to spend my money on a reputable firm that would provide an array of SEO related services and a well thought out process for improving SEO than a fly by night plugin.
