Random Peeks Into Our Everyday Lives

Smarter Not Harder

I once worked for an extremely large maintenance department, an eye opening experience to say the least. As the only clerical support I was expected to enter work orders into the outdated dos based maintenance software, type up purchase requests, complete all the filing, and run regular computer backups.

When I’d been there close to six month they finally got an upgraded version of their maintenance software that ran on the windows platform and was a lot more all encompassing. Inventory, purchasing, reports were added to the tasks performed on the new system solving many over/under ordering issues and reducing the overall work load.

I have to admit that I didn’t miss trying to perform tool or supply inventory totally by hand. It’s overwhelming enough to have to count everything in the whole department without having to go through hundreds of purchase receipts and work orders and calculate by hand what is supposed to be there in the first place. Now I could just click a button and print out a report before I headed upstairs to count, count, count.

I can just imagine how much easier the job would be now with upc scanners fully integrated with the maintenance software eliminating the need for pencils and paper, and the ability to receive and send digital work orders instead of all those little pieces of paper. Almost makes me wish I still worked there, almost.
