Beyond

Once again, the “Dark Night” has come to the village of Durty. The doors are locked, the windows covered, the village gate barred and monitored by forty guards.
As she drifts off, Kierna wonders why they bother, it’s always the same. Every March 31 they locked down and every April 1 they awoke to find someone missing.
Last year Old Nellie had disappeared, and the year before that the Overseer’s son Caleb vanished from his bed. No one knew how the missing were chosen, where they went, or why.
Suddenly Kierna is awake in a long dark hall full of pulsing red lights and shifting shapes, whispers from the blackness beyond call out, begging her to join them. Turning in circles, Kierna can see her bed in one direction and blackness in the other.
Return home or venture into the unknown? Kierna stops turning and takes a step…
