Camera Critters #3 – The Fat Twins

For a long time I volunteered for a no-kill animal rescue, mostly cleaning kennels and providing fresh food and water. I love animals and this was a fun way to help and keep active while my daughter was young. My mother helped the young woman who ran the rescue to update and upgrade her website. As a reward for all our hard work we were gifted the siblings in the photo above.
They were supposedly 8 weeks old and over 3 pounds each, not a chance, I weighed them in a bowl on the kitchen scale, and together they just tipped the 3-pound mark. They had been spayed and neutered mid-afternoon on the day I went to pick them up and the little calico girl was almost dead from the trauma and anesthesia. It was a long evening of waiting and caring; but in the long run everyone came out okay. We named the boy Clark, as in Lewis & Clark the explorers, and the girl Lucy, after my Great-Grandmother a woman of great determination and spirit.

Like all babies must our little sibling pair grew, thrived, and wormed their way into our hearts. They were the joy of my 2 year old’s life and kept her entertained with their kitten adventures. We did however notice that their original names were not entirely accurate. Clark lack any real zeal for adventure and was content to be a snuggler and a baby at heart, we started calling him Clarkie, it just seemed more fitting. Lucy on the other hand did possess that determination and spirit, it just her spirit was a little feistier, and a lot more demanding, Lucyfur, became the new name for this little queen of terror.

Five years later the strange thing about these two is how humongous they’ve actually grown. Maybe they have the “fat gene”, maybe it’s a result of being neutered so young, who knows. The boy usually weighs in the 20-pound range but has weighed in as high as 23 and as low as 18, Clarkie has given way to a much more descriptive moniker, Fat Orange. The girl, Miss Lucyfur, well the attitude has mellowed into extreme neediness and the sweet little frame with the tiniest little paws holds a bulging 16 pounds earning her nickname Pudge.
