Allergy Season

Our trees and flowers are in bloom and there is pollen everywhere. I know they say that the big stuff you can see isn’t what causes problems, but since every time I touch the stuff I break out in hives I beg to differ.

We’ve really been lucky since the move, despite the claims of locals Memphis air is so much better than Atlanta air. While there are things I miss about Atlanta pollen counts of over 5,000 for weeks at a time are not one of them.

It can be tough to compare counts though as each source uses different measurements and methods of display. A quick look at pollen.com shows that the levels here (10.6) are very close to the levels in our old neighborhood (10.7) right now. There does seem to be more of a difference when I check my Benadryl pollen alert widget though with both areas having low grass and weed counts, but tree level in the moderate and very high ranges respectively. Finally a check of The Weather Channels resources shows no weed pollen for either, no grass pollen here but moderate grass pollen there, and very high tree pollen levels for both.

Any way you look at it, right now I’m feeling better during spring than I have in years. I’m sure though, that it won’t be long before everyone in our house is looking for some type of allergy relief as we work, play, and sleep in a world coated with pollen. I hoping to avoid using the OTC and prescription meds we have as they just tend to make us all sleepy and dried out, but when push comes to shove and I really need relief they are a sure thing for breaking the cycle.

How about you, do you suffer from allergies, have any great suggestions for relieving the symptoms, just want to whine about your local pollen count feel free to leave a comment and tell me all about it.

Getting Started With The Decorating

So some how the unthinkable has happened. Two out of three days have passed and not one bit of Christmas decorating has been done. Usually by now we are swapping out the dishes and and hauling the boxes back to the garage.

We are still unpacking, I know it has been almost six months; but there has been a lot going on in that six months. My mother is still recovering from a catastrophic injury and homeschooling certainly takes up more time than I ever could have imagined.

However, we are making progress. We emptied the last of the kitchen boxes before the holiday, and are now down to four living room boxes, and lots of pictures, nic-nacs and other little things. We did some toy organization yesterday and made room for a tree in the living room.

Now we need a tree and to bring in the boxes from the garage. Harvest decorating was light this year so that pack up should only take a few minutes. The question is where to get the tree, it has to be artificial, the allergies in this house would never stand for a real tree, and it can’t be pre-lit. Some how I think finding the right tree is going to take more time than decorating it for once; everywhere I’ve looked all I’ve seen are those pre-lit ones.

I’m off to do the last bit of house cleaning before our shopping expedition, wish me luck.

6:56pm – We have a tree, a tree skirt with penguins on it, and a wreath for the front door. All for about half of what I had expected to pay for the tree. Now we just need to decorate it; but not tonight.

My outdoor picture taking this week was limited to our trip to the zoo, and then the requisite photos of a gorgeous sunset from the Walmart parking lot and our drive home. I’m desperately trying to fit in a trip to the river for some better shots of these sunsets we keep having, but so far it hasn’t happened.
