Looking Forward

I’m just so bad about blogging homeschool. We do so much and have tons of fun; but it’s all I can do most days to keep up with the regular blog posts. We have almost fulfilled our attendance requirement for the school year, but are still going strong. I have picked a couple of extras that we will use to fill the summer on days when field trips and outdoor play aren’t possible. I’ve also come up with an idea for a basic chemistry class for next year.

The first extra we’re doing this summer comes from the decision to read the Percy Jackson series. We are going to learn a little about ancient Greece and Greek mythology. I’ve already picked up one paid lapbook resource, and bunches of freebies from all over the places. I’m using the time she’s spending finishing off the last few things on our second grade checklist to do all my research and put it all together in an easy to use format. I want this to be something that is simple to pick up at any point this summer and not need to do too much running around to complete it.

The second summer extra is mapping and lapbooking Lewis and Clark’s exploration of the west. The Pink Palace is showing a great IMAX film about this and we all really enjoyed it. I haven’t purchased any supplies for this one yet as there are tons of free supplies for the lapbook. I am going to buy a large laminated map for us to do map work on, and some stickers for marking different events. Like the Greek unit I am trying to get everything we need together and all the research done before hand so we can just pick it up whenever and work on it.

The chemistry unit for next school year is the one that has grown the most since the original idea took hold. I started by collecting the element newsletters from Teresa Bondera at How to Teach Science, I also downloaded her periodic table back when it was free, but you can still get it in a couple of different sizes included with other reasonably priced resources on her site. I wanted to add some general information about chemistry and how elements work together before I stared working on the periodic table and in my searching found Chem4Kids and an absolutely gorgeous interactive photographic periodic table. Now I’m in the process of combining all this information into a single simple to use resource for us to work through over the next couple of school years. The best part is the half-pint has already seen some of the materials and can’t wait to get started.

We’re still working our way through the Harry Potter audio books and have started doing read alouds with Ben M. Baglio’s Dolphin Diaries series. She only has a few math lessons in the second grade Time 4 Learning, and we have covered about 90% of what I set out to cover and tons I’d never even considered.

Sun to the West Moon to the East

These are from the zoo last week on Tuesday. As we were leaving after the Komodo dragon feeding my daughter noticed that we could see the sun and the moon in the sky at the same time. We had fun taking pictures in the parking lot. I must admit that it’s fun spending the days with my daughter exploring the world, so much better than searching for how to treat acne or any of those other teen issues I know are coming some day.
