The photo above is one taken last October during a trip to a pumpkin patch in Mississippi. I got to messing with it the other day and decided it would be perfect for a Thursday 13. So here are 13 variations on the photo above done in Paint Shop Pro XI with the names of the effect/script and setting beneath them.

We check a lot of books out of the library each week, some for school, some for fun. We have 3 cards in our household which means we can have up to 75 books, dvds, cds, or videos checked out at any given time. I think most of the time we come pretty close to being maxed out, and on a few occasions we’ve actually had to pick and chose what to check out due to limited space. Oh for the days we were in Georgia and could check out 50 items per card. Here are 13 books, we currently have checked out.

  • The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I started this the other day and I’m still not quite sure what I think of it, I keep hoping for that moment when I fall into the story.

  • The Divide by Nicholas Evans

This book is going to haunt me, I’ve made it 2/3 of the way through and somehow I can’t bring myself to finish it.

  • The complete book of Fingermath by Edwin M. Lieberthal

This was recommended by another homeschool mom and we are excited to give it a try later today. It takes counting on your fingers to a whole new level.

  • Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown

We picked this one and the two below up because we have joined a Flat Travelers Group. Miss Muffin really seems to be enjoying the stories and is thrilled to have already mailed out her first 3 travelers.

  • Flat Stanley's Worldwide Adventures #1: The Mount Rushmore Calamity

  • Flat Stanley's Worldwide Adventures #2: The Great Egyptian Grave Robbery

  • Wild Science Projects about Earth's Weather by Robert Gardner

We haven’t started working with this one yet, but the title just called to me. Nothing like experimenting and making a mess while learning.

  • The National Parks: America's Best Idea

Miss Muffin has really enjoyed the new zoo exhibit modeled after the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, so this lovely book was a no brainer. There are some absolutely gorgeous photos in it.

  • Lion dancer: Ernie Wan's Chinese New Year by Kate Waters

We learned a little about Chinese New Year this year in hopes of tempering the madness of Valentine’s day. It’s a cute story with lots of great factual information and photographs.

  • The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen

I’m looking forward to reading this, perhaps I can bribe myself to finish the other 2 by holding off starting this one….

  • Hour of the Olympics by Mary Pope Osborne

Miss Muffin loves the Magic Tree House Series and this one is so fitting for current events. I’m in search of the research guide for this one now.

  • Molly the Goldfish Fairy by Daisy Meadows

Our girl has read most of these and has even reread a few of the collections. They are such girly girl books, I wonder where she gets it from???

  • Husky in a Hut by Ben M. Baglio

The Animal Ark series is another favorite, even though I seriously wondered about them when we read the first one. They border on being too graphic for her, she is such a sweet, tender kid. She really loves animals though and gets a few of these every time we go to the library. I’m sure she’s read them all twice by now.

13 Favorite American Idol Performances

I had intended to have this up hours ago, but something has gone terribly wrong somewhere and I suddenly couldn’t get any of my videos to work. I finally tracked down 13 on youtube that work. Unlike my carefully crafted original list this is only 13 performances I liked that I could then find on youtube, not my all time top 13. However, since I ripped my hair out over this and am now hoping to find something for me that will work like those hair loss products for men, I think it will have to do.

  • David Cook – Always Be My Baby
  • Chris Daughtry – Hemmorage
  • Brooke White – Let It Be
  • David Cook – Hello
  • Bo Bice – I Don’t Want To Be
  • Blake Lewis – You Give Love A Bad Name
  • Chris Daughtry – I Walk The Line
  • Clay Aiken – Solitaire
  • David Cook – Eleanor Rigby
  • David Archuletta – Imagine
  • Fantasia Barrino – Summertime
  • Jordin Sparks – I Who Have Nothing
  • Carly Smithson – Come Together

Thursday Thirteen

It’s been a really long week and there is still the winter weather advisory that is in effect until late tomorrow. So here’s what I’ve been doing instead of blogging.

  1. Serious homeschooling started back up on Monday, I made a workbook for this week and am now a week ahead.
  2. Returned books to the library forgetting half of the books that were due.
  3. Scheduled for Miss Muffin to attend a local homeschool science class and a museum trip after, and then never got to go.
  4. Cooked Miss Muffin a special breakfast, which I had to abandon mid-cooking.
  5. Discovered that we had an uninsulated pipe along an outside wall when water started pouring out from the laundry room and into the kitchen.
  6. Racing around forever attempting to figure out where the water shut off is, and finding out we don’t have one.
  7. Waiting for the utilitly company to come and turn off the water at the street.
  8. Making multiple trips back and forth to Home Depot and Lowes as the repair project grew due to brittle pipes.
  9. Kneeling in ice cold water and drywall remnants trying not to paint myself with pvc cement.
  10. Turning the water back on only to discover another leak.
  11. Realizing at 8:15pm that all I’ve had since the previous night is half a cup of cold coffee.
  12. Making two more trips to the home repair stores to fix the last leak, and waiting two hours to see if it worked.
  13. Sitting around trying to get warm and enjoying having water again.

Well, there it is, all the fun and excitement of the last few days. At least, I know the pipes in that wall are winter freeze safe, I’ve even added an inside shutoff. AND I now know how to turn the water on and off at the street, a useful tip if you don’t have an inside shut off.

Now it’s time to get back to blogging, and get rid of all the Christmas decorations (hiding head in shame), it’s not just the blog that still decorated.
